What is Cellular Concrete?

Cellular concrete is a lightweight construction material that consists of cement, water, and a foaming agent. It is known for its unique cellular structure, which is formed by introducing air bubbles entrapped in a polymer matrix into the cement during production. These air bubbles result in a lower density compared to traditional concrete, making cellular concrete extremely lightweight. The partial substitution of cement with foam reduces the quantity of raw materials required, lowers transportation costs and emissions, thereby improving the carbon footprint.

Lightweight

Cellular concrete has a significantly lower density than regular concrete, making it ideal for applications where weight is a concern, such as filling voids, reducing structural loads, or insulating buildings

High Weight to Strength Ratio

Despite its lower compressive strength compared to pure concrete, the concrete and foam mix still significantly surpasses most soils in bearing strength, with compressive strengths ranging from 300kPa to 4000kPa, notable for its lightweight nature.

High Flowability

Cellular concrete is highly flowable, allowing it to fill voids and cavities easily. It can be pumped into place, making it suitable for filling trenches or repairing sewer lines

Fire and Heat Resistant

It has good fire-resistant properties and can be used in applications where fire protection is essential

Reduced Shrinkage

Cellular concrete typically experiences less shrinkage compared to traditional concrete. With less than 0.3% shrinkage, what is poured is what is left once it cures.

Other Advantages of Cellular Concrete

  • Self-compacting
  • Permeability can be controlled (low or high permeability options available)
  • High on-site production capabilities
  • Can be batched in remote locations
  • Long pumping distances under low pressure (can be pumped 4 times the distance the pump is rated for standard concrete). This allows for placement in remote locations or reduced traffic congestion and with less risk involved in high pressure pumping.
  • Mobile equipment: Can be utilised in remote locations.
  • Ease of excavation
  • Highly sustainable: Excellent modern green material with low carbon footprint (utilises 5-7 times less concrete)
  • Once cured, well bonded, monolithic and self-supported (no more lateral loads)
  • Cost effective due to less material used and cheaper than alternative flowable fill options.
  • Constantly monitored for Q&A requirements to ensure required strength achieved, minimising material inconsistencies

Overall, cellular concrete is a versatile material with various applications in construction and insulation due to its lightweight nature and excellent workability.
